Wind Farms and Canals

When wind farms are planned we often hear the objection that they will ruin a beautiful landscape.  Fair enough, we need to preserve what little natural beauty there is.  But how often does one hear the same argument against the many thousands of electric pylons around our countryside?  Not often.  Now, what would happen if every single one of our pylons were replaced with a wind generator?  Same aesthetic impact – maybe less if you are of the opinion that wind generators have a certain graceful beauty.  So without any increased aesthetic damage, a great deal of clean wind energy could be harvested instead of the nuclear and fossil fuel generated electricity which would have been transported by the pylons.  It wouldn’t be difficult to map out the positions of the UK’s  pylons and multiply that by the amount of electricity which could be generated for each pylon, to calculate how much free electricity the UK is missing out on.  Easy.  Money for nothing.
Similarly, the UK has a good network of canals.  The locks on the canals allow traffic to move up and down hillsides, and each lock has a bypass weir.  At present all of the water flowing through these weirs is allowed to plummet in a water fall down to the next level.  The organisation which controls the canal system, British Waterways, therefore has at its disposal a huge network of weirs which could be used to drive water generators, and provide free electricity.  Easy.  Money for nothing.
