Science: The Ultimate Spiritual Adventure…
And now, after much jibing at the misuse of scientific discovery, it is time to create the balance. Yes, man has applied scientific discoveries again and again to generate Problems, but this is not the whole truth. For science is Truth. Science is The Universe. Science is Tantra. Yeah, verily…Science is:
The Ultimate Spiritual Adventure.
Where is Truth? Truth exists outside of human perception. For example truth is there in the gravitational attraction between two planets. It was humans who subsequently discovered that the gravitational force followed a mathematical rule:
Force = Mass of Planet 1 x Mass of Planet 2 x A Constant Number
(distance between planets)2
It wasn’t invented it was discovered. This fact - one of millions of mathematical rules was a fact before Homo Sapiens evolved. In fact it was one of the Truths which actually caused Homo Sapiens to evolve. (NB. This work is avoiding the argument of existentialism – that existence only exists when it is perceived – “I think therefore I am”. We are sticking to a common sense and practical approach which successfully unites science and spirituality; that the Universe exists in physical reality, and we are also fortunate enough to be able to perceive it).
The Truths of the universe, like the laws of gravitational attraction, or of quantum fields, or of the travel of sound energy are observed by us. They are observed either directly through any one of our (more than) five senses. Or else we are able to construct apparatus which can itself observe an aspect of the universe, which is unobservable to our raw senses, and convert it to a form which can enter us through the normal senses (eg a microscope can make bacteria visible, but without it they are invisible). The moment of observation is the moment when our soul connects with the universe. It enters us. It re-forms our mind-map of reality. It changes our perception. And observing the universe creates spiritual growth. Spiritual growth occurs when our mind-map grows more expansive, and more accurate, and this is certainly what occurs when one accrues observations of the universe. From an evolutionary point of view, this thirst for understanding is essential – with an expansive and accurate map of our environment we are better able to survive – eg we can learn about viruses and then create vaccines to protect us. The quest for understanding is generated by evolution, it is natural and right and protects us. Science, and evolution and sexual
