SARS
About twelve years ago an article was sent to a scientific journal to see if they would bring a question to the fore: what would happen if a virus developed which was as dangerous as HIV but which is transmitted by air? The question wasn’t published. Twelve years later there is an outbreak of SARS. Do we have SARS or similar viruses under control? To a virus or bacterium the human species is simply a source of food. And countless zillions of micro-organisms are working full time at evolving into a form which can crack us. Antibiotics merely speed up their evolutionary rates. For a low density of human population, an outbreak is more likely to fizzle out rather than become epidemic, as the virus can not easily be passed from one human to another. As the world’s population increases however, the density of people increases too, eventually approaching a critical density where an outbreak will continue to grow. With ever easier communications around the world, we are creating the perfect scenario for further outbreaks in the future. We need to stay ahead.
