Power Cliques
Expedition leaders do not, as a rule, organise trips with groups of three people. There is a good reason for this: in a group of three people, there is a high probability that at some point a division will develop in the team. Maybe somebody will forget the matches. At this point two people will be in disagreement, and then, without conscious thought those two will turn to the third person for support. It happens again and again in human activities from the micro- scale up to the global dynamics between countries.
The person searching for back up is trying to form a power clique in order to crush down their opponent. At the moment of seeking support, the truth is prone to being distorted. It is commonly more important for the arguer to get that support than it is to uphold the truth, so they may attempt to gain the bystanders agreement by distorting their perception of what has really happened, rather than allowing them to clearly see what is going on in reality.
Religious groups are often used as power cliques. For example, President Bush claims to be a Christian, and he claims that God is on America’s side. He does this to gain the support of church groups in America. But it is a clear distortion of the truth. Christ said “turn the other cheek” and “let he who has committed no sin cast the first stone”: President Bush waged an illegal war in Iraq, and he was content to impose the death sentence in his years as a state Governor. The truth therefore is that he is not a Christian, but his distortion is an attempt to gain support of religious groups by distorting their perception of reality. Deceiving religious groups has been common throughout history; the Nazis allegedly had God on their sides too - Gott mit uns; “God is with us” was their motto. Bush further distorts the truth by supporting the notion of creationism – again to gain the support of the religious groups. The scientific evidence shows evolution to be an observable truth.
Power cliques are often sought between countries. It is convenient for America to have the U.K. on their side. The American team then becomes bigger and more powerful and can more easily beat down the opposition. It is the same dynamic which causes right wing people to read right wing newspapers, and vice versa.
In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, Napoleon is the pig-dictator who takes control of the farm. He invents an imaginary enemy who none of the animals has ever seen, and the sheep are happily seduced into the illusion and blindly add their support to Napoleon’s dictatorship. The understanding has been around for a long time, but we still fall into the trap.
When a person succeeds in seducing a bystander into their control, they are then more able to beat down their opposition. From an evolutionary perspective, they are then more likely to be able to pass on their genes. The adversarial behaviour is a throw-back to our primitive ancestry. Homo Sapiens is still evolving; we are a new species somewhere between what we were, and what we will
