But that attitude isn’t going to help us when we get to the Pearly Gates. Our own spiritual growth, and ability to give love is inside us, and that’s all. Shutting the door on Jehovah’s Witnesses or shooting Gandhi, or crucifying Christ is not going to help. We will actually step down the guilty scale by punishing the good people. Only logical thing to do – be nicer to everyone!
Same with environmentalists. Aren’t they all just goddamn irksome, opinionated, muesli-munching crusty-hippy-righteous-bastards!? Making us feel guilty when we have to use the car, or want to buy mahogany, or can’t be bothered to lobby our MP, or won’t recycle our newspapers. All that work they make us feel guilty about not doing. So much easier to switch them off when they’re on the telly or whatever. So….why don’t they let us be happy? Well, it’s because the environmentalists want us all to be happy that they feel they must act on their hearts and take the responsibility to improve our world. They listened to their conscience, and they found the strength to put their scientifically proven principles into practice. But of course, if every hippie in the world never uses a car again, it isn’t going to make a squit of difference – they account for such a small percentage of the population. So they have to try to convince everybody to change. That means either by legislation (stick) or persuasion (carrot). So it is because campaigners love you that they want to change you. Tricky one, but when you understand them you realise they’re on your side.
They want us to use cars less, so there’s less demand for new roads, so fewer Sites of Special Scientific Interest go under the bulldozers (yes, this does happen – designating an area as officially protected does not stop the government destroying it, even if legally it should. Only fear of losing elections makes governments listen). So the anti-car lobby want to protect the few remaining wild places for us all to enjoy. The very least we can all do is listen, and maybe once in a while catch a train. And of course road traffic kills about 3600 people in the UK every year – if an illness did that, there’d be a national panic. Compare that figure which occurs every year to the statistics for those killed by terrorist acts, which in the UK is almost none every year. Then look at the relative panic for traffic deaths compared to terrorist deaths. An order of magnitude more are maimed, and I think about 20,000 suffer or die from road traffic pollution related illnesses. In doing what they do the environmentalists are actually caring for these people. Giving love to us all. Caring for the
