Japanese Dream Machines

A new invention from Japan claims to be able to give users the dreams they want.  The device detects when the user is entering REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the part of sleep where most dreams occur, and then plays prompts to us, like sounds or people’s names in order to steer our dreams to where we would like them to be.  Sex with superstars maybe, things like that.

Sounds like fun, but dreams are there for a reason.  They are natural, it is our minds’ way of sorting out the stuff of the day.  Processing massive amounts of information.  In short, it is nature’s way of keeping us mentally healthy.  Psychologists use dream analysis with great effect to tap into our subconscious minds, and help to cure mental illness in psychotherapy.  Concepts in our lives often take on physical forms in our dreams, and interact with us.   It is truth, and it is natural.

When you mess with the natural way of things you are risking creating a problem.  Going against Dao.  So if we go down the path of influencing our own dreams, we will be preventing our minds from correctly processing information, and there may then be the risk of creating mental problems in the users.

Man’s ego going against nature.  Cleverness potentially creating problems.  It may be safe to use dream machines, but the manufacturers don’t fully understand the process of dreaming.  In creating dream-machines the manufacturers are only pursuing money.

This point of view may be dismissed with shouts of “kill-joy”.  But bringing this potential problem to the fore is in fact an act of love.  Love is often perceived the wrong way round.
