I waited in the foyer, and my relatives soon appeared to tell me he had died. Everyone cried. There was an upsurge of strong feelings in everyone. The family never functioned well, and sharing this sad experience didn’t bring us together as one might hope.
When people tell us it is difficult to stop smoking, they are not telling us the whole story. The truth is it is astoundingly simple – you can easily choose not to buy tobacco, you can choose not to light your cigarettes; the physical challenge of not putting a cigarette into your mouth is, in reality, very easy. Learning to juggle is difficult, crossing Antarctica is difficult, but not smoking a cigarette is in reality easy. But we are conned by the illusion that it is difficult. In fact when people talk of how difficult it is, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy – in a hypnotic way, we start to believe that it is a mighty challenge, and consequently we carry on, convinced that it is too difficult for us to tackle. We allow ourselves to be controlled by the illusion. The truth is our minds are supremely powerful. If we choose not to smoke, there is nothing which can make us carry on. We are in truth totally in control of our lives and choosing to stop smoking is a simple, quick decision.
If you used to smoke, and assuming you are not smoking now; the truth is you are now a non-smoker! If you want to stay that way, you are now in total control. You may choose to become a smoker again, but don’t be fooled by the people who tell you it is difficult.
People in control of themselves are attractive to others. You are now one of those controlled, attractive people. The only choice you have in front of you now is: Do I become a smoker again?
