How 9/11 Could Have Been Avoided

About a year before the September the 11th attacks a jet was carrying holiday makers to Spain. One passenger was invited up to sit with the pilots for a while. A completely unknown person had rapidly found herself in a safety-critical position. She was slightly stunned, and pointed out this slack security to the two pilots.
“I mean, I could be anybody”. She said. And the pilots looked at each other in an uneasy silence. Inside them they knew the woman had raised something important. Then the holiday-maker realised that in her pocket was a knife! Ok, it was only a Swiss army knife, but if one of those could be got into the cockpit, then it could just as easily have been something more menacing. She stopped short of demonstrating further their sloppy security by getting the knife out, as there may have been a nasty incident.
What could have occurred from there? The pilots could have raised the security issue with their company, who could have taken action to prevent people getting to the pilots, which could have prevented the September 11th hijackings, which could have prevented the Iraq war. Just a thought.
