Green Issues

Why do the Greens seem to whine about conserving energy?  Because we can easily cut our energy use to a third, and fossil fuel usage can be reduced further by converting to renewable energy sources.  The UK is positively blessed when it comes to renewables.  We have more wind and wave potential than almost every country in Europe.  Tidal power on the Severn Estuary could supply a monstrous 1/3 of the UK’s energy requirements.  Even Scandinavia makes greater use of solar energy, and it lies further north.  So we want to cut fossil fuels which produce CO2 on a scale which geological time has never seen before, which has been shown scientifically to be producing global warming, which will have a range of consequences, from rising sea levels flooding lowlands to extinctions, probable spread of malaria, God knows what else.  It’s an experiment on a planetary scale, with unknown effects.  If you were playing Russian Roulette, how many empty chambers would you feel ok about before you put the gun to your head and pulled the trigger?  I sure as hell wouldn’t play it.   Same with the planet.  The risks are too great – the only intelligent thing to do is to act to prevent our world going down the pan.  Only answer.  It isn’t therefore self-interest on the part of the Greens; environmentalists aren’t saving the world for themselves – many adverse consequences will only become big problems many years from now. Environmentalists are giving love to the people and life of the future.  The very least we can all do when we meet an environmentally conscious person, is firstly to listen.   And if we feel giving up the car or whatever is too great a struggle, we can do a little bit somewhere.  We should at the absolute least not have so little strength of character as to belittle the efforts of a few good people, to try to make ourselves seem better by comparison.  We should thank and support environmentalists and other people who campaign for a better world.  Sign the petition.  Give money.  Recycle a bottle.  Give a little moral support by standing up and saying “I think the environmentalists have got a good point.”
We meet points of decision every day whether to act or not to the benefit of others, or for the world.  When it happens next will you listen to your inner voice, or try to suppress it?  Embrace truth or persecute?
