Don’t automatically believe the scientists who tell you Genetically Modified Organisms are safe. They don’t know. Science, by its definition is at the forefront of human knowledge. The purpose of science is to find the answers which we don’t have at present; research into GMO’s endeavours to answer questions about the safety of genetic technology. In other words we don’t yet know if it is safe.
Like in so many walks of life, scientists are prone to use their status to add credence to what they want to do. Are priests automatically good people just because they preach Christian values? If so, why have so many sexually abused children? The status – scientist, priest, teacher, psychiatrist etc – is the illusion: The reality is that there are talented scientists and poor ones. And there is good and evil in everyone regardless of their status or the nature of their work. So don’t believe the professors because they are professors – some of them are in it for the money, some are incompetent, and some are in it for the little bit of glory they can get from trying something new, and being able to tell people “I did that!” The ego-boost.
Consider CFC’s. These chemicals were deliberately designed to be inert so they would be safe to release into the environment. But chemists have negligible training in environmental science, and the environment, like the mind, is so complicated nobody comes close to understanding it fully. So CFC’s were manufactured on an industrial scale, and soon afterwards, the ozone layer, which protects our planet from dangerous UV radiation, started to disappear. It turned out that high in the earth’s atmosphere the CFC molecules were reacting with O3 ozone molecules and destroying the ozone. But it wasn’t supposed to go like that. It was a cock up. CFC’s were thought to be inert. Same with DDT – somebody actually ate some on telly to demonstrate its supposedly safe credentials. Then it started to appear in mother’s breast milk, and certain birds of prey went into decline because this “safe” chemical worked its way through the food chain. Same with radium. Same with asbestos. With these chemicals the solution to the problems which had been created was easy – stop releasing it and in time the chemicals would eventually dilute and decay, and the normal ecological balance would return. But with GM organisms it is different. GM organisms reproduce – when you release them, the Genie cannot be got back into the bottle. So don’t believe the so-called scientists. The GM bods have very often had little or no training in environmental science – they don’t know what they are doing. It is an experiment on a global scale – and this clock won’t be easy to turn back.
And the multi national GM companies like Aventis will use their public relations machine to massage the minds of the population. They’re bound to, are they not? If people don’t buy GM how can they make billions of dollars every year? So they will tell us they are trying to feed the poor in the third world. It’s about money, not feeding the poor. The poor suffer because of political reasons which can easily be overcome if there was a will. Third world farmers will not be able to afford the GM seeds nor the companies’ pesticides which are designed to be used with the same
