Global Mental Illness
It was interesting when describing one particular shrink’s ego problem to a psyche-nurse, the nurse backed him up. Institutional ego. An example of a personal mental illness working its way up the scales to the institution level. How many people in companies will fight to protect their workplace when the behaviour of their company against the world outside is put under question? It works from the personal level, higher and higher, eventually to the global scale. What about fighting “for Queen and Country”? National ego. Why would one fight for one’s country? What if everyone in the world took that attitude? Not every country in the world is perfect, so the people living in the bad ones who are also fighting for their country are fighting to protect something bad. Criticise a person’s country, and they feel they are being personally criticised – their ego’s are threatened, they feel a slip down the social status ladder – the risk of not having their sperm/eggs wanted – so they fight in knee-jerk fashion, to maintain the illusion that they and the country they are fighting for are good. Mad.
Bullying works its way up from personal levels to the macro scale as well. So some aggressive institutions may actively damage other, perfectly good, institutions around them. Justifying their nastiness with denial and self-delusion. On the international scale, it becomes something akin to dictatorship, or maybe a powerful state like the US using its size to intimidate smaller states to take what it wants from them through biased trading agreements like GATS or the World Bank or whatever. The individuals inside them feeling safe in their personal anonymity – not feeling they are personally looked at and so able to get away with making the nasty selfish decisions which hurt other countries, other institutions and hence other people. A system built on taking. Not giving. Primitive. Savage.
The world has mental illnesses.
But we can be cured, and perhaps we will be in time, with greater global communication and transparency. That’s how truth prevails. With transparency. Keep secrets and evil can do its deeds. I doubt I’ll see great changes in my life-time, sadly. A good quality of the Internet – allowing truth to prevail.
Anyway.
