“I’m going to live after my death by having my left nostril sewn up.” Hmm. Well a shrink might see this as a little bit psychotic. There is actually no real way that mutilating one’s nostril can make one closer to God. In fact a really dedicated shrink might see the idea of God as a delusion. So if that example is clearly wrong, how is it that a conventional psychiatrist will be OK with the notion that a Jewish man can be closer to God by having his foreskin removed?
As I write I can feel the ego’s of millions baulking at the notion that they might be wrong. And then they will feel the overpowering urge to hunt down and punish the people who quite simply asked such a question. Truth rejection? And persecution.
Or how about this scenario with a shrink:
“I’m going to be forgiven for my sins in three previous lives by heading up to Newcastle and shouting ‘Tyne Tyne’”. Clearly if an Englishman were to actually believe this to be true, it would be a delusion. And where actually are the previous lives? I can’t remember mine. But go to a shrink and tell them you’re a Hindu and that you can be forgiven sins by calling “Ganga Ganga” 100 leagues from the Ganges, and the shrink will respect your right to religious freedom and let it pass. A psychiatrist who was really committed to reality might attempt to treat such a condition.
What about swinging incense burners in High Catholic ceremonies? How does that get us closer to God? Or growing your hair long, or giving up sex, or holding an arm in the air for years, or being put under water, or covering one’s face, or spinning wheels with writing on them, or throwing stones onto the ground, or singing Hallelujah, how exactly does it all work?!
You are free. You are allowed to take a step back and see religion as a scientist or psychiatrist would. You can always return to your previous way of thinking after you have let your mind wonder. You don’t need to feel guilty for asking questions. You are allowed to think whatever you want. And you don’t need a book to give you the answers. Free your mind, surrender your ego and all the universe’s truth is there for you to enjoy.
All written here is open for rejection. These are questions. What is the truth? Is it Judaism, is it Hinduism? Do we have the strength to question?
